The automotive industry is definitely not weakening. Lamborghini and Ferrari have recorded strong performances for this beginning of the year 2023, exceeding the analysts’ objectives. A first quarter that ends on a high note for both manufacturers.

Lamborghini’s sales soar

Between January and March, the Italian carmaker saw its sales rise by +23%, compared to the same period last year. At the end of the first quarter, the company’s turnover reached 728 million euros. This is a good start and a nice birthday present for the brand, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

Operating profit increased significantly from 178 to 260 million euros over the same period.

A performance that follows Lamborghini’s very good results last year, with a +22% increase in sales to 2.38 billion euros, double that recorded by the brand in 2017.

The reason for this remarkable data? The delivery of more than 2 600 models over the beginning of the year. It’s safe to say the Italian automaker has outdone itself, as such a score has never been achieved before.

These very strong numbers add up to an order backlog that almost fully covers 2024 production,” Lamborghini said in a statement.

Record delivery numbers, multi-year bookings and a new path to electrification. Lamborghini definitely has more than one trick up its sleeve, or rather under the hood.

Ferrari follows suit

The same atmosphere at the other Italian carmaker. In the first quarter, Ferrari’s profits increased by 27%. The share price of the prancing horse brand reached a record high on the Milan stock exchange of 267 euros last Thursday, an increase of almost 6%.

Ferrari’s EBITDA amounted to 537 million euros with an adjusted margin of 38%, exceeding the brand’s expectations. And like its competitor, this notable performance is driven by high sales volumes, with more than 3 500 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2023, 9.7% more than the previous year. This performance was driven in particular by the Portofino M, 296 GTB and 812 Competizione models.

The second quarter should follow in the footsteps of the first, with the long-awaited deliveries of the Purosangue about to begin. The only downside is that the company has seen a drop in revenue from engine sales, caused by the end of a deal with Maserati.

But the ambition does not slow down, especially since Ferrari will soon enter the green world of electric cars, with a supercar that should arrive in 2025.
