With the development of watchmaking, some excellent manufactures have sought a way to protect and differentiate themselves from the arrival of low quality watches. It is in Switzerland, more particularly in the Canton of Geneva that the history of the hallmark was born.
The timepieces manufactured in the canton of Geneva will have their own certification, this hallmark will guarantee their quality and ensure the rarity of a know-how of excellence. “The beauty of a watch must serve to magnify its proper functioning. This is why the Poinçon de Genève submits each watch to several controls to ensure their quality and reliability. A watch certified with the Hallmark of Geneva is the assurance of a true watchmaking product resulting from advanced technologies, durable and precise”, declared the Hallmark of Geneva.
It was in 1886 that the hallmark of Geneva appeared for the first time. Ten years earlier in 1878, the Société des Horlogers de Genève and the State Council proposed a bill, with the objective of defining the contours of a certification of the timepieces produced in the Canton: this law is the “Optional control of the watches of Geneva – Poinçon de Genève“.
However, the Manufactures wishing to attest their timepieces with the Geneva Seal must respect numerous conditions. Only brands that produce their timepieces in the Canton can apply for the Geneva Seal. The certification is also based on criteria relating to quality assurance, function control, water-resistance, running accuracy and power reserve.
The companies that still use the hallmark of Geneva today are Cartier, Chopard, Vacheron Constantin and Roger Dubois.
Nevertheless, some manufactures decide to establish their own certifications, such as Patek Philippe in 2009. Patek Philippe’s certification is more advanced than that of the Hallmark of Geneva, thanks to a control process that is fully integrated into the manufacturing process.
Step by step, other organizations created their own certification in order to compete with the prestigious hallmark of Geneva. The Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres (COSC) is a non-profit association created in 1973. This association was created by five watchmaking cantons (Bern, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Vaud) and by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. “Proof of the very high value of the COSC “chronometer” certificate is that only about 6% of Swiss watches exported (source: Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH) benefit from it,” says the COSC.
Later in 2008, the Fleurier Quality Foundation was created, a Swiss certification body for high-end watchmaking quality. This project was carried out by independent watch brands, Chopard, Parmigiani Fleurier, Bovet Fleurier and Vaucher manufacture Fleurier. To earn the “FQF Certified Fine Watchmaking” certification, the timepiece will have to pass the test of five very demanding steps.
