Kering’s Material Innovation Lab (MIL) and the Pitti Immagine Foundation have just announced a partnership to benefit young designers. Together, they want to encourage the new generation and help them in a sustainable and more responsible approach on the S/Style sustainable fashion area of the Pitti Uomo show, which will take place from June 13 to 16.
Kering, one of the world’s leading luxury companies, created MIL in 2013. This laboratory aims to promote traceability and sourcing of more responsible and innovative fabrics. But also, measure the impact of materials.
And it is today with the Pitti Immagine Foundation that Kering has decided to collaborate for a more sustainable and committed men’s fashion. This is a first since the creation of the S/Style sustainable fashion space at the Pitti Uomo show by the Pitti Immagine group.
The project aims to support young men’s fashion companies to choose more environmentally friendly practices, starting with the choice of raw materials. The MIL’s role will be to support the designers who present themselves in the S/Style sustainable fashion section of the Pitti Uomo show.
Pitti Immagine Uomo, to use its full name, is one of the most important platforms in the world for men’s clothing and accessories collections. Established in 1972, what was originally a trade show, held twice a year in Florence (Italy) also helps launch new projects in men’s fashion. For three and a half years, its S/Style Mode Durable space has been highlighting a dozen brands, to help them develop their collections.
Small names, but big projects
The ten brands participating in S/Style have already been announced. They come from all over the world and have been spotted and selected beforehand by the journalist and curator of S/Style sustainable fashion, Giorgia Cantarini.
They are Cavia (Italy), Dalpaos (Italy), Dhruv Kapoor (India), Isnurh (Denmark), Jeanne Friot (France), Ksenia Schnaider (Ukraine), Olooh (Ivory Coast), Permu (UK), Steven Passaro (France) and Young n Sang (South Korea).
Each designer plans to explore multiple solutions for the environment, while adopting responsible practices, which include upcycling (reuse of fabrics) and bio-based techniques. It is also about using recycled materials and promoting fair ethical work that supports artisans.
“Pitti’s S|STYLE project seems to fit perfectly with Kering MIL’s open innovation attitude and approach. This is an unusual partnership to support young and emerging brands that want to embrace sustainability, add innovation to their low-impact capsules and give them the opportunity to showcase new material prototypes that have been tested or validated by MIL and materials aligned with our Kering Standards,” said Christian Tubito, Kering MIL Director.
“The collaboration with Kering’s Material Innovation Lab is an important recognition of the work we are doing to spread a modern culture of responsibility in fashion; but most of all we are pleased because Kering MIL can concretely help designers to know and use the most innovative materials for their design research at an international level. Thanks to a skilful and up-to-date curatorial approach over the last three years, S|STYLE has drawn the attention of the media and Pitti Uomo buyers to some 40 young designers and emerging brands, each with an original style and a truly fresh approach to issues of great concern to the new generation,” said Lapo Cianchi, Pitti Immagine’s Head of Communications and Special Projects.
This partnership between Kering’s Material Innovation Lab (MIL) and Pitti represents a great lever for small companies, as it provides them with knowledge of cutting-edge innovation and how to integrate it into their design process. A little boost for them, and a useful and lasting exchange for both institutions, which are shaping the men’s fashion of tomorrow.
