The effects of the health crisis, added to those of the increase in VAT in Japan since 2019, have hurt new vehicle sales, which fell by 12.3% last year.
According to the Japanese Automobile Dealers Association (Jada), 2.88 million cars (excluding kei cars), trucks and buses were sold in Japan in 2020, i.e. 400,000 fewer vehicles than in 2019.
Including kei cars, automobile sales in Japan fell by 11.5%, i.e. nearly 4.6 million units over the whole of 2020.
The last month of the year showed a certain increase of 7.4% over the year (+10.1% in December over a year with the kei cars), with 243,753 new vehicles sold, but this still represents a decline of 3.7% in November.
No Japanese manufacturer escaped the crisis, Nissan’s annual sales in volume terms fell by 27.5%, Mitsubishi Motors saw a much greater fall of 41.3% and Honda by 17.8%. Toyota held its own more easily and posted a 6.4% fall.
However, not everything is linked to the pandemic, which has only accelerated the previous problems linked mainly to the increase in Japanese VAT, which rose to 10% against 8% in October 2019. Nissan, for example, already posted a 13.8% drop in the same year.

Les effets de la crise sanitaire, ajoutés à ceux de l’augmentation de la TVA au Japon depuis 2019 ont mis a mal les ventes de véhicules neufs qui ont chuté de 12,3% l’année passée.
