In six months, the use of animal fur for profit will be banned in Israel. The country thus becomes the first one in the world to ban the trade of all animal fur.
This Wednesday, June 9, the State of Israel signed a ministerial decree banning the trade of animal fur for fashion, a historic step forward in animal rights, and a first in the world.
“The trade in animal fur, import and export, will be prohibited except for the needs of research, education and certain religious traditions,” said the Ministry in a statement dedicated to this decree.
This decision will come into force within six months. While animal fur is essential to the manufacture of “Schtreimel“, a fur hat ritually found among some ultra-Orthodox Jews, an exception is made for items of a religious or traditional nature, and thus the use of animal fur in the manufacture of Schtreimel remains permitted.
Proud to be the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur! ?

“The fur trade industry causes unimaginable suffering to animals and this decree will transform the Israeli fashion market by making it better in terms of environmental standards,” Environment Minister Gila Gamliel said in the statement.
The director of the International Anti-Fur Coalition (IAFC) welcomed the decision in a letter published by the ministry: “Israel is the first country in the world to close its doors to this cruel industry,” wrote Jane Halevy-Moreno.
The breeding of animals for their fur has been banned in Israel since 1976, and several countries have recently introduced similar but partial decrees, banning only the use of fur from endangered animals, such as the seal, a use banned in many countries.
Finally, while no other country has passed a total ban on the use of fur in commerce, many cities have already taken similar measures at the municipal level, such as Sao Paulo in Brazil and the State of California. In India, however, there is a nationwide regulation that only applies to fox, mink, and chinchilla skins.
