Jean-Louis Etienne has created the Polar Pod expedition to study the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. This approach is supported by the Hublot watch brand as part of its Hublot Xplorations program.
Polar Pod‘s mission is to collect data for the international scientific community with an environmentally friendly, zero-emission vessel.
Driven by westerly winds, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) brings together three oceans: the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic. Driven by the circumpolar current, like a satellite around Antarctica, the Polar Pod will allow the acquisition of data and long-term observations that will be transmitted to researchers, oceanographers, climatologists and biologists. In total, no less than 43 scientific institutions from 12 countries are involved in the project.
As part of its Hublot Xplorations program, the Swiss watchmaker has signed a new partnership with the Polar Pod expedition. Designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, the Polar Pod is 100 meters high, stabilized by 150 tons of ballast. Without motorization, it will be driven by the circumpolar current and supplied with energy by six wind turbines.
The construction of the Polar Pod will start in June 2022, for a launch at the end of 2023. The expedition will then take place until 2026. The Hublot Xploration project, which includes this partnership, is based on three pillars: Space, with the creation of components for Space X’s Exomars Mars robot ; Earth, through support for the Sorai association for the protection of rhinoceroses and other endangered animal species ; and the Sea, with Anticythère and now Polar Pod.
This partnership with explorer Jean-Louis Etienne celebrates Hublot’s maritime roots, from which the name itself derives, and embodies the motto “Be First, Different and Unique” dear to the Swiss company.
