A second trailer for Ridley Scott’s next film has just been unveiled. The biopic, which features the lives of Patrizia Reggiano and her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci boasts a five-star cast, but does not please the heirs of the founder of this iconic house.
It is a highly anticipated feature film for fashion and history buffs. House of Gucci, directed by British director Ridley Scott, focuses on the assassination of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of the founder of the Italian fashion house that he ran for ten years. A star-studded cast surrounds the director, including Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Adam Driver and Jared Leto.
The film will be released in theaters in late November 2021, and will mark the brand’s 100th anniversary, was unveiled in a new trailer released last Friday. The trailer shows a stunning Lady Gaga in a domineering, chic and very characterful attitude. The pop star takes on the role of a younger woman in the person of Patrizia Reggiano, Italy’s most famous widow, the deceived wife who was left for a younger woman and ended up murdering Maurizio Gucci, her husband, for which she was sentenced to 29 years in prison, before being released in 2016 for good behaviour after 18 years behind bars. The trailer therefore depicts a film steeped in design, legacy, power and infidelity, which promises to reveal thirty years of family secrets from one of Italy’s biggest fashion houses.
But there’s a catch. House of Gucci is not viewed favourably by the heirs of the Italian family, such as Patrizia Gucci, the designer’s great granddaughter. Already last April, when the film was leaked on the Internet, she made it known that her family did not approve of the film. “We’re really disappointed. I speak for the family. They are stealing a family’s identity for profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system”. Maurizio Gucci’s cousin confirmed this, adding: “Our family has an identity, a private life. We can talk about anything, but there is a line that cannot be crossed.”
The casting also did not convince the heir family, especially the choice of Al Pacino for the role of Aldo Gucci. “My grandfather was a very handsome man, very tall, with blue eyes and very elegant. He is played by Al Pacino, who is already not very tall, and now he is presented as fat, short, with legs, really ugly. It’s a shame because it doesn’t look like him at all,” said Patrizia Gucci. The choice of Jared Leto for the role of Paolo Gucci, Alton’s son, is not at all pleasing. “Horrible, it’s horrible. I’m offended,” said his daughter.
Ridley Scott‘s film is already controversial, even before its release, as the latter has to compensate for the semi-failure of The Last Duel. House of Gucci is due to be shown in cinemas from 24 November.
