Main victims of the pandemic and the multiple lockdowns, hotels and casinos have been closed to the public for many months. The step-by-step reopening schedule put in place by the French government stipulates the reopening of the latter as of May 19.
After more than eight months of waiting, the future for casinos is finally becoming clearer: they will now be allowed to resume business in less than a week, from 19 May 2021. However, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, the minister of State for tourism, has made it clear that not all casino facilities will be open to the public immediately. Indeed, casinos will be able to reopen with a capacity of 35% and can only operate slot machines. From 9 June onwards, the gaming tables and their staff will be able to resume operation, and the establishments will welcome up to 50% of the public. It is only from 30 June that they will be able to welcome their full clientele, only if the health conditions allow it.
What will happen to the hotels?
As far as hotels are concerned, they were also closed during the successive confinements. Outside these periods, particularly in the summer of 2020, although some hotels chose to remain open, the majority suffered a very sharp drop in business. The cessation of tourism also had a negative impact on their situation, since this foreign clientele constituted a large part of their profits. The Prime Minister Jean Castex had declared last October that the hotels that would keep their doors open were not allowed to open their restaurants. Another difficult blow for the hotel industry.
But like the casinos, the hotels have finally got a date for their restaurants to reopen. From 19 May, their customers will finally be able to have lunch or dinner in the hotel restaurant. If foreign customers are still not back, this reopening is already a big step forward for the hotels.
