The 161st Hospices de Beaune wine auction took place this weekend, with a record-breaking sale of a cask of Corton Renardes Grand Cru, sold for 800,000 euros.

The Hospices de Beaune wine auction is a key event in the Burgundy wine world. It is indeed the first indicator of the great wines of Burgundy, some of which can reach record sales prices.

This year, these charity auctions raised no less than 11.67 million euros, more than last year, but with almost half as many lots. “It’s absolutely amazing,” said François Poher, director of the Hospices civils. “We have never sold so many good wines and produced so little“, added Frédéric Drouhin, president of the Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne (BIVB).

The highlight of the auction, the “pièce de charité” or “pièce du président” as it is also called, was this year a barrel of Corton Renardes Grand Cru, sold for 800,000 euros, a record, considering that the previous year’s price was 660,000 euros. A rare vintage produced at very low volumes. This is a record sale for the event, the proceeds of which will go to Solidarité Femmes, a network of associations dedicated to victims of domestic violence, and to the Institut Curie for breast cancer research.

The Hospices de Beaune wine auction was marked this year by the low volumes offered. Due to a harvest almost halved by the weather, only 349 pieces of red and white primeur wines were offered to buyers, compared to 630 last year.

This year’s edition was also marked by a change of auctioneer. The American auction house Sotheby’s took over the auctions held since 2005 by its British competitor Christie’s, in order to develop its wine market in France.
