In Washington, the Trump International Hotel will become a Waldorf Astoria Hotel, bought by the Hilton Group for $375 million.
The US government said it was allowing former US president Donald Trump‘s company to sell the rights to a luxury hotel in Washington to a Hilton affiliate. The hotel sold for $375 million.
The U.S. General Services Administration, acting as the federal government’s landlord, said it approved the deal between the Trump Organization and CGI Merchant Group, a Miami-based investment firm that plans to operate the property as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
Located in the historic Old Post Office building, not far from the White House, the Trump International Hotel served as a meeting place for the former president’s supporters and some foreign government officials during his presidency.
The deal is a significant victory for the ex-president’s business, after business partners cut ties following the January 6, 2021 riot on Capitol Hill by Trump supporters.
The hotel is a former post office, built between 1892 and 1899 and an example of Richardson‘s Romanesque architecture. It served as the city’s main post office until 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War. Thereafter, this landmark structure on Pennsylvania Avenue served primarily as a federal office building.
