Between now and 2024, the luxury group Hermès has decided to set up its leather goods workshop in the former Riom tobacco factory, creating 250 jobs.
“Our initial question was: is there a brownfield site to be transformed? We are part of history. We are going to recreate manufacturing jobs in the heart of the city. We think this is a modern approach. The future site is five minutes from the station, close to the buses, we are working on soft transport with the agglomeration community. Building a new building would have had a greater impact on the carbon footprint. Starting with the existing building is more ambitious. “insisted Emmanuel Pommier, general manager of the Hermès leather goods and saddlery centre.
The French luxury group had already announced this news last September, or at least its project of creation, without precise location, with 250 jobs at stake. The amount of the investment was not revealed.
“We didn’t take the easy way out. By preserving the site’s manufacturing vocation, we are proposing an ambitious sustainable development approach. “Emmanuel Pommier confided.
“We have worked with the urban community and an architectural firm that has confirmed that this beautiful project fully meets our expectations,” he continued.
The announcement will “restore optimism after these difficult months”, the Agglomeration Community was pleased to announce in a press release on Monday 8 March.
This project is in line with Hermès’ massive expansion: 9 new workshops in France in 10 years, including 2 in 2021. The location chosen is not insignificant, as it will allow a certain proximity to the leather goods craftsmen located in Sayat. The latter will thus be able to be the trainers of the future craftsmen recruited.
Since November, 23 people have been undergoing training with the craftsmen of the Hermès site in Sayat, in a temporary workshop in Riom. 40 candidates out of 200 will start their training in May and 40 others in October/November. In 2022, a similar rhythm should be proposed after recruitment work carried out in collaboration with Pôle emploi.
Indeed, know-how and experience remain essential for Hermès.
“We make sure that the sites do not welcome more than 250 craftsmen in order to preserve a craftsmanship spirit, a human and family dimension. »
