Hermès opens a flagship on Madison Avenue

Hermès is opening a new store in New York City on the Upper East Side on October 3.

 

Hermès is unveiling a flagship store at 706 Madison Avenue in New York City. The new store, which will open to the public on October 3, 2022, covers 1881 square meters and combines New York dynamism with Parisian elegance.

 

For this occasion, the American artist Mike Perry has designed a window display with a joyful and kinetic spirit.

 

The 706 Madison store is a fusion of three buildings, orchestrated by the Parisian architectural firm RDAI. The central structure, built in the Federal style and completed in 1921 as a branch of the Bank of New York, occupies the southwest corner of the block. The interior is inspired by the city’s Art Deco past and the early Manhattan skyline. It features materials such as stucco, straw inlay, leather and handmade wallpaper.

The 50-foot-high main wall features a collection of artwork, including a painting by French artist Antoine Carbonne depicting a colorful nature scene, several equestrian-themed photographs, as well as reproductions of Hermès square designs, including Centered Rhyme by Elaine Lustig Cohen, Fauna and Flora of Texas by Kermit Oliver and American Quilts by Aline Honoré. To celebrate the store’s opening, the latter square was reworked in a new color palette and other exclusive objects were made, including several Kelly bags, a Bolide bag, two watches (Hermès H08 Madison and Arceau Madison), a jukebox and a bicycle.

At the top of the building, visitors can admire the impressive curved glass roof that lets in natural light and enjoy a rarity in New York: a hanging garden. To design it, landscape architect Miranda Brooks was inspired by the bas-relief created by French artist François Houtin.

 

In a spirit of transmission and demonstration, five artisans from different trades of the house will present their know-how in a workshop dedicated to repair on the fourth floor.

 

The Hermès New York flagship offers an original experience that allows visitors to appreciate the new collections, request the services of a concierge or enjoy refreshments at the bars located on the ground, second and third floors.
