On October 28, the world’s largest duty-free shopping mall was inaugurated in Haikou, the capital of Hainan, an island in southern China.

The Haikou International Duty Free or the Eldorado of tax-free luxury. Located on the Chinese island of Hainan, this new complex was conceived by the China Tourism Group Duty Free (CDF), recently listed on the stock exchange.

It covers 280,000 square meters. It is larger than Florida’s largest shopping mall, Aventura, and exceeds Westfield-London, Europe’s largest shopping center.

The difference? This complex is entirely dedicated to duty-free shopping. The group describes it as “the largest duty-free store in the world” and is becoming a domestic tourism engine for Hainan City. Since the introduction of a zero covid policy on the mainland, this southern Chinese island has become the alternative to overseas travel for Chinese citizens.

In a statement, CDF said, “With the continued recovery of the domestic tourism market, the group will maintain its dominant position in the Hainan tourism retail market, and Haikou International Duty Free City will become a new benchmark.”

Last year, about one in two travelers to the island visited duty-free stores and about one in six made purchases. By 2021, these sales would account for about half of the province’s tourism revenue.

More than 800 international and domestic brands are present at Haikou International Duty Free. Among them are luxury brands such as Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as Ami, Tom Brown and Maison Margiela. Seven of them have developed exclusive concepts for the new center.

The beauty section is grouped in a gigantic space, spread over an entire floor.

But that’s not all. The mall brings together other experiences than just shopping, such as the luxury spas offered by Givenchy and Guerlain. There is also a Whisky Museum, the first in China, as well as a giant theater, with a dome screen and a 60-seat carousel.

As for the decor, one enters the mall like in an enchanted forest. Between pink flowers, futuristic trees and hanging water lilies, the visitor joins a parallel world and doesn’t know where to look. From the outside, the center does not go unnoticed, with an architectural structure inspired by the begonia flower.

A strategic location

The department store is located on the island’s west coast, close to its new seaport. “This is a new landmark event in the construction of Hainan’s port,” said Feng Fei, governor of Hainan province, at the opening ceremony, adding that “offshore duty-free shopping has become one of the island’s great tourism business cards.

The shopping complex is only one part of the 930,000-square-meter Haikou International City project. It has six plots dedicated to duty-free shops, offices and luxury hotels.
