After the devastating floods in Italy last week, the LVMH and Stellantis groups each announced that they had donated one million euros to help the affected populations and territories. Before them, Kering, Ferrari and Formula One had also opened their wallets.

Major corporations show solidarity with flood victims in Italy. Luxury goods group LVMH and carmaker Stellantis have each donated one million euros ($1.10 million) to support flood relief efforts in northern Italy, the Emilia-Romagna region announced Monday.

Last week, six months of rain fell in just 36 hours in the Italian region. This caused some 20 rivers to burst their banks, sending water cascading through towns and submerging thousands of hectares of particularly fertile farmland. 14 people were killed in the floods.

Stellantis’ Maserati brand is based in the region, while LVMH described Italy as its “second home” in a statement announcing the donation.

“We are witnessing an extraordinary mobilization and solidarity and I thank once again all those involved”, said Stefano Bonaccini, the region’s president.

The donations follow generous gestures from Kering (for 2 million euros), luxury car maker Ferrari and racing group Formula One. The Italian government will meet on Tuesday to discuss aid measures in the wake of the tragedy, which could cost the region billions of euros. Other members of the European Union have provided specialized pumping equipment to help move the floodwaters.

Water levels slowly receded, allowing residents and volunteers to continue their efforts to clean up the streets and salvage what can be saved.

However, some 23,000 people were still homeless as of Monday afternoon, and more than 620 roads were closed in the region, according to a report by authorities almost a week after the disaster. Most of those affected have been rehoused with friends or family. But about 2,600 are also staying in hotels, schools, gymnasiums and other centers set up by local authorities, the Emilia-Romagna region said.
