Thélios, an eyewear company owned by the world’s leading luxury goods company LVMH, has acquired the metal company Metallart. At the same time, Thelios has signed a three-year agreement with the Venice International Film Festival as an eyewear sponsor.
Thélios was born in 2017 from the desire of the LVMH group to enter the eyewear sector. Today, Thélios – a contraction of the names of the Greek gods Theia, Goddess of light and sight, and Helios, God of the sun – designs, produces and distributes sunglasses and optical frames for prestigious brands such as Dior, Fendi, Céline, Givenchy, Loewe and Fred.
The company has become the official sponsor of the Venice Film Festival, which unveiled its selection for the 79th ceremony on Tuesday. “The Venice Film Festival is one of the most prestigious events in the world. We are proud to support La Biennale di Venezia, a global ambassador of Italian culture. Linked by their attention to detail and sense of aesthetics, cinema and eyewear have always been close, offering a vision on the world. In the history of cinema, eyewear has helped create iconic film characters and define their personalities: we couldn’t think of a better field of expression than this festival, so close to our roots in the Veneto region,” says Alessandro Zanardo, CEO of Thélios.
From 31 August until the end of the event on 10 September, this collaboration also includes the Thélios Suite, located at the Hotel Excelsior, which will include a showroom and event space for press junkets of films in competition as well as “other press and industry events“.
Strengthened expertise in metalworking
The company has strengthened its team with almost 300 new employees over the last year, including more than 250 people already employed in Longarone (Italy), the city where its headquarters are located, since the beginning of 2022, to better meet the growing demands of the LVMH group’s houses, which have entrusted the company with the design, development and worldwide distribution of their eyewear collections. The workforce will be joined by that of Metallart, a historic company founded in 1976, operating in the artisanal metalworking sector and based in Cima Gogna di Auronzo.
The press release states that “this operation confirms the central role that the territory plays in Thelios’ development plans and the company’s firm intention to exploit the excellent know-how present in the Belluno eyewear district through strategic investments”. Metallart specialises in metalworking using traditional techniques such as shearing and coining.
