The French group specializing in luxury leather goods, Hermès, plans to open two new leather workshops by 2026 in the southwest of France in the Charente and Gironde regions. This strategy will strengthen the company’s already strong regional presence.
Located in the towns of L’Isle-d’Espagnac and Loupes, these two leather goods factories will create 500 new jobs in France. This is excellent news for the employment sector and for the Charente and Limousin regions.
The Hermès Group currently employs 17,600 people worldwide, including 4,300 leather craftsmen, to whom the 500 new jobs will be added. With 52 factories and production sites in France and an international network of 300 boutiques, the L’Isle-d’Espagnac and Loupes factories will be the company’s 23rd and 24th leather goods workshops.
“The L’Isle-d’Espagnac leather goods factory joins the South-Western leather goods industry, which includes the Nontron and Montbron leather goods factories and the Saint-Junien glove and leather goods factory, which have been present in the region for more than 25 years,” said Hermès in a statement.
Hermès is committed to building lasting relationships with its local partners and is preparing to set up shop in L’Isle-d’Espagnac with the help of the New Aquitaine Development and Innovation Agency and the Greater Angoulême Urban Community. For the development of its new sites, the company relies on its partnerships with Pôle emploi, the Poitiers education authority, the Greta Poitou-Charentes agency in Angoulême and the Greta CFA Aquitaine. The L’Isle-d’Espagnac site will also draw on the expertise of the teams at the Nontron and Montbron leather goods factories and the Saint-Junien glove and leather goods factory.
“The Loupes site, along with the Guyenne leather goods plant, will become Hermès’ eighth leather goods plant in the Gironde region,” it said. It will benefit from the proximity of the experienced craftsmen of Guyenne leather goods, which has been located in the Gironde region since 2020.
Hermès’ regional presence will be enhanced by the École Hermès des Savoirs, an apprentice training center accredited by the French Ministry of Education, which will open in September 2022 in Montbron and, in early 2023, at the Maroquinerie de Guyenne. The school will train apprentices in a sustainable profession based on the House’s excellent leatherworking skills.
The opening of these two new leather goods factories is in addition to the three other factory opening projects currently under development by the brand, located in Louviers (Eure), Tournes and Cliron (Ardennes) in 2023 and Riom (Puy-de-Dôme) in 2024, where “recruitment and training are continuing“, the brand emphasizes.
