It was in a recent letter to the staff of J.M. Weston that the succession of Thierry Oriez by Marc Durie was unveiled. The former president is leaving the company to devote himself to other projects, according to the letter.
As President, Marc Durie will be responsible for “implementing the brand development strategy, and in particular the collections and internationalization, Durie’s experience in the Asian market may prove useful : the company would like to expand in Asia and the United States” according to WWD.
Marc Durie, a graduate of the Lyon School of Management, brings with him a considerable experience in the world of luxury goods : Louboutin, Louis Vuitton, J.Mendel, Yves Saint Laurent. A fan of art, museums, reading and pilates, this man of many resources has always greatly enjoyed walking “in Paris or in the country”, so much so that he has found the right shoes for his new company. This man who dreamed of becoming an auctioneer has always wanted to “imagine the future of ancestral brands”, an added value for J.M.Weston.
Occupying management positions for each of these companies, Marc Durie first started at Louis Vuitton as part of an internship and launched the footwear division there, an experience during which he learned to “reconcile a creative vision with a business imperative”. In 2013, he returned to Louis Vuitton as Vice President in charge of visual merchandising in thirteen Asia-Pacific countries. A region with which he was already familiar, since between 2008 and 2011 he doubled the presence of the Yves Saint Laurent brand, particularly in China. Subsequently, he was chosen to be the manager for three years of J.Mendel, a former supplier of furs to the Russian imperial family. His last experience before J.M. Weston was then head of the men’s footwear division at Christian Louboutin where he increased the men’s shoe share to 30%.
Artisan of modernization since 2014 and supporter of innovation, he should then fully meet the imperative challenge of his position : the development and internationalization of the house whose sales are currently 80% in France.
Durie will report to Valerie Hermann, President of EPI’s Fashion and Luxury Private Equity division, which includes Bonpoint and J.M. Weston. This relationship is not insignificant given that Valerie Hermann was his former boss when he was President of the Asia-Pacific region for Yves Saint Laurent.
The future of the shoe house is on the move and shows a promising development with a luxury expert and a team player, products at its head. The brand will also celebrate its centenary next year.
