What challenges await Chloé’s new artistic director?

While a week ago Natacha Ramsay-Levi announced her decision to leave her position as Creative Director of the Chloé brand, it was announced last Monday that Gabriela Hearst would take over the artistic direction of the house.

After Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney, Natacha Ramsay-Levi and others, it is now Gabriela Hearst‘s turn to join the long tradition of female appointments as Creative Director at Chloé. The young woman herself admires “all the other extraordinary creators” who have preceded her in the fashion house. Gabriela Hearst said she was “very honoured to be able to work with Chloé’s team to help realize this beautiful vision in a creative and responsible way.” The Uruguayan-American designer stated her intention to make Chloé “a socially responsible and environmentally balanced company.”

Responding to this challenge seems to be within the reach of Gabriela Hearst, who launched her own brand Candela in Brooklyn in 2004. In 2015, the self-taught designer launched her eponymous line, which was a resounding success. Her creations, timeless and produced with respect for the environment, have been worn by eminent personalities such as Meghan Markle, Oprah or Jill Biden. In September, the designer of the iconic Nina bag won the CFDA Award for American Designer of the Year in the women’s fashion category.

Chloe’s recent appointment as Chloe’s Creative Director adds to this impressive list of awards. The designer will remain the creative director of her personal brand, which benefits from a financial investment at LVMH. Gabriela Hearst, who is now artistic director at Chloé as well, will have to work to make the brand more responsible, while honoring the work begun by many women before her and respecting the values of the company.

“I have always admired Chloé’s vibrant creative energy and exquisite sense of quality and craftsmanship. Her powerful vision of more responsible fashion truly embodies the values and sense of commitment of today’s Chloé women”, said Riccardo Bellini, the brand’s CEO, in a press release. Announced for March 2021, Gabriela Hearst’s first Chloé collection will allow us to see if the designer’s creations truly echo the French house’s line.
