The Watches & Wonders International Fine Watchmaking Exhibition was due to open its doors as it does every year in Geneva, Switzerland. But faced with the worldwide spread of COVID-19, it was finally held online until 29 April, with the participation of thirty prestigious watchmaking houses. Here we unveil a preview of the best of 2020’s novelties in five exceptional watches.
Piaget’s “Altiplano Ultimate Concept”, the world’s thinnest watch
While the Swiss manufacture has always been renowned for its race to achieve ultra-flatness, with many records in the field, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept far exceeds all that was thought possible in the field of mechanical watchmaking and pushes back the limits of miniaturisation.
“With the Altiplano Ultimate Concept, only 2 mm wide, we have probably pushed the limits of ultra-flat watches for quite some time,” commented Chabi Nouri, Piaget’s Chairman and CEO, in an interview with Le Point magazine.

A true feat, enabled by a series of architectural and technological achievements, including an unprecedented fusion of the case, back and movement, as well as a series of innovations aimed at reducing the size of each of the components on a microscopic scale, such as the wheels, which have gone from a thickness of 0.2 mm in traditional watchmaking to 0.12 mm, the thickness of a hair!

“Luminor Marina Fibratech, Panerai’s Fluorescent Watch
The Italian watchmaker has unveiled a new Luminor Marina Fibratech with the more than unexpected Super-LumiNova X1 inserts.
The luminescent material is used not only on the dial (indexes, hands, contour) but also on the crown protector, its lever and the crown. A brand new achievement that allows the watch to be admired in both light and darkness.

Furthermore, Fibratech is a 60% lighter than steel, robust and extremely corrosion-resistant composite material made of natural fibres and is eco-sustainable: “The unidirectional mineral fibres of Fibratech, bound by polymers, form thin layers one on top of the other in a precise direction before being consolidated by a process of controlled pressure and temperature. », explains the brand.
Unique materials for a completely exclusive watch, limited to 270 pieces.

“Master Control Calendar”, the astronomical watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture is reinterpreting its Master Control collection born in 1990 and revisiting historical traditions.
Like its predecessors, its new Master Control Calendar is equipped with a triple calendar, complete with the display of the day, month and date of the calendar as well as a moon phase.

But it has many other surprises in store for us: in addition to the performance improvements of the 899 calibre made to the 866 calibre, Jaeger-LeCoultre engineers have added an unprecedented complication, the jumping date, which leaves plenty of room for the moon phase display. Every month, the date indicator jumps literally 90 degrees between the 15th and 16th day of the month.
This is the first time that Jaeger-LeCoultre has used these complications in a watch that brilliantly combines technical excellence and aesthetic sobriety, watchmaking and astronomy.

“1858 Geosphere in Blue”, the Montblanc traveller’s watch
In 2020, the Maison Montblanc unveils a new blue and frosty white collection that evokes the Earth, glaciers and snowy mountains.

A model that has become the brand’s watchmaking emblem since its launch in 2018, the Geosphere has, according to its creator, Davide Cerrato, a specific function: “to import the spirit of adventure into the office or home“.
Rooted in the world of mountaineering, the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere dual time-zone watch makes traveling in a flash thanks to its two rotating globes corresponding to the northern and southern hemispheres and its universal time complication. Its rotating bezel also provides orientation in relation to the sun and the seven small red dots on the dial show seven legendary peaks.
Sporty and adventurous.

“Singing Birds”, the musical watches of Vacheron Constantin
The Geneva manufactory was very prolific while presenting many new creations.
Such as a series of four unique pieces “Les Cabinotiers-Les Oiseaux chanteurs-La Musique du Temps“. Each of the watches represents a different songbird, the work of Vacheron’s master enameller: a blue jay, a blue tit, a robin and a hummingbird.

The bells evoke the imaginary song of birds, while the hour display is more original than ever: three arms, each carrying a four-digit rotating disc, take turns along the minute scale.
