While Watchfinder & Co opened the doors of a new showroom in Paris in March, the specialist in luxury watches is about to open its first Parisian boutique in the following weeks. To prepare for its entry into the French market, the firm has conducted a study of Google data on luxury watches over the past twelve months, identifying the 10 most popular models in France.

From September 2019 to September 2020, 62.7 million searches for luxury watches were carried out worldwide. In total, these searches covered more than 2,080 different brands and models. Indeed, it was targeted searches, that is to say searches related to specific models and not made up of generic terms (“luxury watch“, “men’s watch“) that interested Watchfinder & Co. analysts.

France alone has around 4.8 million searches for specific luxury watch brands and models, which represents an average of around 405,000 searches per month. These results made it possible to determine the most fashionable watches of the moment. Thus, Rolex Submariner takes first place with 486,000 searches recorded from September 2019 to September 2020, or approximately 40,500 searches per month. The brand is followed by Rolex Daytona (397,200 searches during the year, or about 33,100 per month) and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (177,600 searches last year, which equals 14,800 searches each month). Surprisingly, Rolex Datejust has the exact same number of searches as Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

Finally, six different models have less than 10,000 searches per month but are included in the top ten of the ranking: Patek Philippe Nautilus (118,800 searches last year, or around 9,900 per month), Rolex Oyster Perpetual and Tag Heuer Monaco ( 97,200 searches last year, or about 8,100 per month), Breitling Navitimer (79,200 searches last year, or about 6,600 per month), Rolex Day Date (64,800 searches last year, or about 5,400 per month) and Cartier Santos (64,800 searches last year, or about 5,400 per month).

In light of these results, we can note that half of the ten watches at the top of the ranking established by Watchfinder & Co. belong to Rolex. During the year, over 1.7 million searches in France were related to specific Rolex models, representing over 35% of all searches for luxury watches in the country. This research frenzy for Swiss watches is also visible on a global scale. At the top of the established ranking are the Rolex Submariner models (approximately 5.1 million annual searches, or an average of 430,000 monthly searches), Rolex Daytona (approximately 3.8 million annual searches, or approximately 320,000 monthly), Rolex Datejust (approximately 2.5 million annual searches, or approximately 210,000 monthly) and Rolex Oyster Perpetual (approximately 1.8 million annual searches, or 150,000 monthly).

Noting this predominance of Rolex on the luxury watch market, Matt Bowling, the co-founder and CEO of Watchfinder & Co., saw that “Google searches from the past year demonstrate the incredible popularity of Rolex, both in France and in the world. No wonder these prestigious, high-precision timepieces are so coveted, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that, from Patek Philippe to Omega, including IWC Schaffhausen and A.Lange & Söhne, there are many other models worthy of interest, just as exceptional […] Submariner aficionados could well be charmed by the Black Bay of Tudor, and fans of the Daytona should not remain indifferent to the charm of a Carrera Chrono by Tag Heuer; and Omega’s Aqua Terra is a match for a Datejust.”
