The first retrospective devoted to the French designer Thierry Mugler will be held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris on the 30th of September. Named “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime“.

It will be possible to admire until April 24, 2022, nearly 150 ready-to-wear and haute couture outfits of the brand, stage costumes, as well as clips, videos and archives.

Thierry Mugler, who for a long time refused to exhibit his work, finally created a surprise by opening a retrospective celebrating his impact on the fashion world for the first time at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on March 2nd, 2019. The exhibition featured dozens of Mugler’s iconic creations from 1973 to 2001, ranging from his fantasy heroines to his robot women, birds and insects, stage costumes, and a host of music videos and films featuring celebrities dressed in Thierry Mugler designs, such as George Michael and Isabelle Huppert.

After Montreal, two more retrospectives were held in Europe, specifically at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, Netherlands in October 2019 and then at the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich, Germany in April 2020.

With the Covid-19 pandemic having brought the fashion and haute-couture world to a halt, no further Mugler retrospectives have been scheduled. In a bid to get out of the crisis, a fourth retrospective has just been announced, and will take place in the French capital at the end of the year.

2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of the French couturier’s last collection at the helm of his own House, and this retrospective will be the means for him to bid farewell to haute couture, wanting to devote himself from now on to the creation of shows and costumes.

The public will thus be able to recall the career of Manfred Thierry Mugler within the walls of the Parisian institution, which regularly devotes itself to great names in fashion history. As an example, the MAD exhibition dedicated to Christian Dior held in 2017 and 2018 was a great success, attracting more than 700,000 visitors.
