The Lady Dior bag revisited by Claire Tabouret

It is from details of two of his works that the painter Claire Tabouret customized the famous Lady Dior bag. The double reinterpretation of this emblem of luxury will be presented on November 20, 2020 in the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York, before being marketed in early 2021. The bags will be limited to 100 pieces each, for a price ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 euros.

 

Although she had already been commissioned by the Ugg brand to design a coat and boots, Claire Tabouret did not hesitate to respond to the proposal made to her in 2019 to transform the iconic Lady Dior, designed in 1995 and worn by Lady Diana herself.

 

Indeed, since its introduction in 2016 by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Dior Lady Art project has been inviting artists to reinvent the famous bag. For this 5th edition of the event, ten artists or collectives from around the world (China, Madagascar, India, South Africa, Russia, United States) were invited to divert the appearance of the mythical accessory. Alongside Claire Tabouret, Joël Andrianomearisoa, Judy Chicago, Gisela Colon, Song Dong, Bharti Kher, Mai-Thu Perret, Recycle Group, Chris Soal and Olga Titus each proposed their vision of the Lady Dior bag.

 

Like all the others, Claire Tabouret’s work is a true metamorphosis: the artist decided to take fragments from two of her paintings and decorate the bag directly. Her choice stopped on the detail of a round of dancers for a first bag, as well as a female vampire mouth for a second revisited replica of the luxury product.

 

The first edition of the bag reworked by Claire Tabouret features fake fur and is described by the artist as “a polar bear, soft and toxic at the same time, escaped from Chernobyl, who would walk at night in the moonlight in search of his soul mate.” The other bag, this time made of leather and featuring a scarlet mouth, reminds her of “an 18th century vampire woman in a bondage club.” Thus cleverly rethought, both bags finally have a phosphorescent lining that Claire Tabouret considers her signature. Applied to the lips of one bag like a piercing, the four letters of the Dior brand, stained with blood, are also clearly visible on the second bag.

 

By transforming the “flat rectangle” of her canvases into a “three-dimensional object”, Claire Tabouret has met the challenge she faced from Dior, whose brand image is being renewed with brilliance and originality once again this year.
