After a first rich series on the articulation between art and feminism and a second one on the history of all the women who have shaped Dior’s heritage, the French luxury house is back with a third series of podcasts entitled “The female gaze”. This new season gives the floor to three women photographers and designers who collaborate with Dior and contribute with their work to offer a radically new and progressive image of women. A contemporary outlook on feminism, which the couture house has made its voice heard.
When Dior Talks was inaugurated last March, the French house Dior entered the fast-paced world of podcasts: thirty-minute recordings exploring topics cherished by the brand, such as fashion, feminism, art, culture and society.
After a first season on feminist art and a second on the influence that women have had on the life and career of fashion designer Christian Dior, the brand is renewing its commitment to women by introducing a third series on its Dior Talks podcast channel inspired by the writings of feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey.
The feminine gaze of Dior
Dior’s third series of podcasts thus continues to explore a theme dear to the house: feminism.
This new season, hosted by British journalist and author Charlotte Jansen, comes back over three episodes on three women photographers and designers collaborating with Dior. A series of interactive dialogues, informal conversations about how they have contributed over the years to promote through their work a radically new and progressive image of women in society.
First to kick off the ball was Maria Grazia Chiuri, Artistic Director of Dior’s women’s collections.
Since 2016, she has sought to make the idea of the female gaze an essential part of her work, convinced that the DNA of Dior is defined by femininity. The Italian designer then chose to work only with women photographers, writers and artists – such as war photographer Christine Spengler – a revolutionary concept that aims to initiate a new dialogue around the perception of women by women in the 21st century.
The second episode focuses on Maripol, a cultural icon of the 1980s in New York City and an influential artist, filmmaker, designer and stylist – known for her pioneering use of the Polaroid camera – an opportunity to revisit her career and collaborations and reveal her unique view of life, culture, fashion, style and … feminism.
The final episode, published on May 29th, focuses on Janette Beckman, a New York-based, London-born photographic icon. The opportunity to evoke her experience as a young woman and as a foreigner on the New York music and photography scene, but also to express her own “feminine gaze” and to look back on how she captured, with her direct and irreverent eye, unique moments while shooting different campaigns for Dior.
These intimate and outspoken interviews, feature three women who, through their careers, vocations, works and creations, tell the story of how, in a male-dominated fashion world, they have been able to draw the contours of a feminism in motion.
A way for Dior to convey non-stereotypical representations of femininity, to celebrate differences and to rewrite preconceived ideas.
