According to a new report from Cox Automotive, Tesla is the top selling vehicle brand in the US, overtaking competitors like BMW, Lexus, Mercedes and Audi.

In 2021, Tesla brand sales will total 352,471 vehicles in the US compared to 205,600 vehicles in 2020, an increase of 71% according to the Cox Automotive report. These results are driven by sales of the Model Y crossover with an estimated 190,393 vehicles and the Model 3 sedan with 121,877 sales, according to Cox.

By 2021, battery electric vehicle sales were 487,460 vehicles, up 89% from 2020, of which 352,471 were Tesla vehicles built at the Fremont, California, factory. As a result, Tesla has surpassed the sales of BMW, Lexus, Mercedes and Audi.

“Tesla not only dominated the electric vehicle market, Tesla dominated the entire luxury market, surpassing Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz in the United States,” said Cox Automotive.

Tesla’s results can be explained by its handling of the semiconductor shortage crisis relative to its competitors.
