Distilled by the Gautier house in 1762, this bottle of cognac is estimated between 80,000 and 150,000 euros by the multinational auction company.

Sotheby’s is selling until 28 May the bottle of “Big Brother” cognac, the oldest known to date, a true relic of the house of Gautier founded in 1750 in an old water mill in Aigre in Charente. This is where this cognac that has become historic is produced.

Acquired by the Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits group, it is now one of the oldest cognac houses still in operation.

The bottle of cognac “Big brother” is the star piece of the three known bottles of the Gautier vintage 1762. The largest bottle of these three rarities, the bottle captures the attention of all collectors while its “Little sister” is kept in Gautier museum and that his “little brother” was sold at auction for the tidy sum of 55,000 euros.

But beyond its preciousness, it is also the history of this bottle that has stood the test of time that seduces buyers. During the 18th century, the great-grandparents of the current owner of this property raised an orphan named Alphonse. It is this young man, after having worked for ten years in the Cognac region, who brings his bottle to his benefactors. Certainly acquired as a salary, the bottle among the full cart it carries is in perfect condition.

Since then, the vintage has been preserved in the family cellar, in perfect state of conservation, to the delight of collectors.

During this sale, connoisseurs will also find a large Italian collection of Samaroli whishy as well as other bottles of great rarity.
