Prada has successfully entered the world of jewelry with its first ethical collection in 100% recycled gold.

This Wednesday, October 12, Prada officially enters the luxurious world of jewelry. The first pieces of its collection are on display in Milan. And this, in the very first boutique that the label had opened in the Italian city, in the Vittorio Emanuele II gallery (since transformed into a Marchesi café). Prada jewelry is also available online and in all Prada stores.

In Milan, about thirty pieces, out of a total of forty-eight, are displayed in this boutique-lounge, all in designer furniture and beige and almond green carpeting. This very first collection of Prada has an evocative name Eternal Gold. On the wall, the campaign by photographer David Sims features actress and singer Maya Hawke, poet Amanda Gorman and singer Somi Jeon. A sleek and sophisticated black and white campaign that perfectly represents the collection’s airy and radical aesthetic.

It took almost fourteen months for the Italian label to develop its concept and creations. The project was led by its new director of jewelry, Timothy Iwata, in close collaboration with Miucca Prada and Raf Simons, the house’s co-artistic directors, as well as Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s director of social responsibility.

Is ethical gold possible?

This ethical collection is in line with the house’s eco-responsible commitment. The brand, an innovator in the luxury and fashion industry, had introduced in 2019 regenerated nylon or decided to stop using animal fur. With its jewelry made entirely of recycled gold, certified by the Responsible Jewelry Council, Prada strikes a blow.

“Every step in the responsible gold and diamond production chain is verifiable and traceable,” says Timothy Iwata.  “Our suppliers meet all the highest industry standards for human rights, workplace safety, environmental impact and business ethics.”

Prada, which uses only a handful of carefully selected suppliers, also claims to use only industrial or post-consumer gold from precious objects. This principle is also applied to its precious stones. The house is betting on absolute transparency, recording the verification of each stage of sourcing and manufacturing on the blockchain platform of the Aura Consortium (which includes Lvmh, Prada and Cartier (Richemont).

The Milanese label succeeds in its bet of upcycled jewelry concept and makes a place for itself in this very exclusive world, next to fashion and luxury houses such as Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton or even Gucci.
