German carmaker Mercedes-Benz yesterday, May 19, unveiled its ambition to significantly strengthen its luxury car offering.

In a statement released Thursday, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said that the premium and luxury offering will be allocated 75% of the brand’s investments. Källenius also wants the top third, the “Top-End Luxury” range, to grow by 60% by 2026.

Luxury, “which has always been the heart of our brand, will now be at the center of our strategy,” explained the latter.

Are concerned the Mercedes-AMG models, limousines EQS, the G class and the S class as well as “limited editions” , and will therefore be privileged and put forward by the manufacturer. “We call it high car, as everyone knows high fashion,” emphasizes Källenius.

Despite a decline in group sales of 10% in Q1 2022, its net profit increased by 3%, with a margin of 16.4% over the same period. 16% of sales were concentrated on the S-Class and AMG. Mercedes-Benz wants to continue this trend in order to take advantage of the consequent demand for more luxurious cars, although the prices of the group’s models are rising due to shortages of materials.

For the rest of 2022, the German manufacturer hopes to achieve a profitability of nearly 14% “in favorable market conditions” and 12% “in a normal market”.

To achieve this goal, it will redefine its “entry-level” models: the A-Class and B-Class. The number of these models will be reduced from seven to four, while the models themselves will be redefined and “elevated”, with more technology on board. Their price will therefore be revised upwards.

In terms of markets, “China is important for our growth strategy, but it is not the only growth market,” says Källenius. Indeed, Europe remains a significant market for the manufacturer: it is counting on “growth in wealth and potentially more customers for the premium and luxury offers”.
