LVMH: A new project that doesn’t meet with unanimous approval

The French group LVMH has quietly announced, during the summer, its new project.  It is the establishment of a large research center dedicated to sustainable and digital luxury, on the campus of the Polytechnique school. But some students find the idea unwelcome.

In July 2021, the French group said it wanted to create “a global research center dedicated to sustainable and digital luxury,” with an opening planned for 2024/2025. In a statement, the luxury giant said it would centralize 300 employees and researchers with the aim of working on luxury and protecting the planet.

The company would like to invest about 100 million euros in this project. The future research center would be located on the campus of the Polytechnique school, on a piece of land called “Innovation Park”, which would be used to host other laboratories and companies. However, this idea is not well received by everyone.

Polytechnique students say no

In an article published last Thursday on the website of the newspaper Le Monde, the graduates of the Polytechnique school expressed themselves and accused Bernard Arnault’s group of wanting, through this project: “to cement a false respectability on the environmental issue and to secure a privileged access to the students of the campus, while the benefits for the École would be extremely meager, both financially and scientifically.

They add: “We firmly oppose the realization of this deleterious project. It could only contribute to deviating the School from its primary mission and to degrading the already damaged bond of trust that the country has with its elites“.

They are therefore calling on the Administrative Council to reject this project at the Board of Directors meeting scheduled for late October 2022.

The letter, published a few days ago, echoes a previous outcry from students concerning TotalEnergies. They denounced the interference of a private company. The question for the students concerns the legitimacy of a private company within their public engineering school
