Kering and “Les rencontres d’Arles” will award the Women in Motion 2021 prize to the Russian-Ghanaian photographer Liz Johnson Arthur, as part of the 52nd edition of the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles.
For the past two years, the luxury goods group Kering and Les rencontres d’Arles, an annual photography festival, have partnered to present the Women in Motion award, which is intended to honour the career of an artist/photographer each year. This year’s winner is Liz Johnson Arthur.
Officially presented on Monday 5 July 2021 during the first evening at the Théâtre Antique d’Arles, this prize will salute her commitment throughout her career as a photographer. She will share her work, her career and her views on the place of women in photography with the festival audience. This prize will also be accompanied by an endowment of €25,000 for the acquisition of works by the winner for the Rencontres collection.

Over the past 30 years, since 1991, Liz Johnson Arthur has built up a body of photographs dedicated to the African diaspora around the world, known as the Black Balloon Archive. Kering explains that “her dynamic documentary photographs, in colour or black and white, paint a complex picture of Black identities”. She does not work with a ‘subject’ – “she photographs human beings and uses her work to tell stories”.
“I am interested in people, people I don’t see represented anywhere. Women have been part of the history of photography from the very beginning, and they have produced some incredible work. The great thing about this award is that it shines a spotlight on work that hasn’t always been recognised and it alerts us to the fact that recognising the work of women photographers shouldn’t just happen once a year,” says Liz Johnson Arthur.
Born in 1964 in Bulgaria, she has lived and worked in London for 30 years. Her work, the Black Balloon Archive, has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the South London Gallery in London in 2019, as well as at the 10th Berlin Biennale in 2018 and the Photographers’ Gallery in 2016. In addition, his monograph with Bierke Verlag was listed as one of the New York Times’ “Best Photo Books 2016” and was also awarded the Turner Fellowship in 2020.
An artist recognised and admired for her talent and commitment, who will naturally receive the Women in Motion prize, and who will also be present in the ‘Masculinities’ exhibition at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2021.
