With the growing demand in America and Asia, Hermès also continued to expand in Europe and opened new leather goods manufactures to increase its production.

The Guyenne leather goods factory, Hermès’ first production site in the Gironde region, is located in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, about 20 kilometers northeast of Bordeaux. It employs 180 people and will eventually add 280.

This development is based on a very encouraging dynamic, following the excellent results obtained by the firm revealed last July. Indeed, the group had announced an exceptional first half-year with sales amounting to 4.235 billion euros, up 70% compared to 2020 and 29% compared to 2019, just before the pandemic.

With this new leather goods company located near Bordeaux, Hermès is committed to its role as a job creator and demonstrates its willingness to participate in a sustainable way in the growth dynamics of the regions.

Last week, 40 new recruits joined the ranks of the Guyenne leather goods factory for a training program lasting approximately one and a half years. They will, in turn, be able to give life to unique objects, such as the house’s mythical bags.

We are in a sustained growth rhythm and who says growth rhythm for Hermès leather goods says increase in the number of craftsmen, training and therefore new site,” explained Guillaume de Seynes, general manager of the group’s upstream and participation division.

Special attention to the environment

Designed by Bayonne architect Patrick Arotcharen, the 140-meter-long building rehabilitates a former storage area. Hermès is participating in the development of the area while promoting biodiversity. More than a hundred trees were planted to create a welcoming garden for employees. It also has 2,250 m2 of photovoltaic panels, which cover more than 40% of the energy consumed, and fully LED lighting. Finally, rainwater is reused for the sanitary facilities and the watering of the outdoor area.

Guillaume de Seynes spoke on Monday, September 13 at the Palais Brongniart for the third edition of the Sustainable Leather Forum. This forum dedicated to CSR in the leather, luxury and fashion industries, organized by the National Leather Council, is intended for discussions on the future challenges of the leather industry.
