Gucci and Facebook announced on Tuesday that they had filed a joint lawsuit in California against a retailer who allegedly used the US company’s social media platforms to sell fake Gucci products.
In a statement, Gucci and Facebook explained that the unidentified individual allegedly used multiple Facebook and Instagram accounts to promote his international online counterfeiting activity.
“More than one million pieces of content were removed from Facebook and Instagram in the first half of 2020, based on thousands of reports of infringing content from brand owners, including Gucci,” the statement said.
According to the report, the actions of Gucci’s in-house IP team have resulted in the removal of four million counterfeit product listings online, the seizure of 4.1 million counterfeit products and the disabling of 45,000 websites, including social media accounts, in 2020 alone.
This first-of-its-kind initiative between Gucci and Facebook is not the first time an internet giant and a luxury brand have teamed up to combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods sold on social media.
Indeed, Amazon filed similar lawsuits with Valentino and Ferragamo last year.
Moreover, more and more groups like Facebook are looking to tap into the luxury market, so they need to preserve the reputation of their platforms, which are often seen as vehicles for counterfeiting.
