The EPI Group, a private equity firm and owner of several major wineries and champagne houses such as Piper-Heidsieck and Biondi-Santi, has acquired the Tuscan winery Isole e Olena.

Founded in 1956 by the De Marchi family, the historic Isole e Olena winery is located in San Donato in Poggio and is one of the wineries that contributed to the recognition of Chianti Classico as a high-quality wine region in the 1970s and 1980s.

The latter includes 56 hectares of vineyards located between 300 and 500 meters above sea level, which have been producing a high-quality wine since 1978 and even received the “Super Tuscan” designation in 1980.

I am looking forward to taking an active part in writing this exciting new chapter for Isole e Olena to ensure a smooth and gradual transition. […] After more than 45 years of developing Isole e Olena, the time has come to address a well-known issue that I have been aware of for a long time: to ensure a bright future for my life’s work by entrusting it to someone who would have the skills and knowledge to carry my legacy even higher. I think EPI is the right group, for its French expertise in building luxury brands combined with the experience of Sangiovese and its Italian temperament”, emphasizes Paolo De Marchi, who will nevertheless retain his role as the estate’s oenologist.

Indeed, this acquisition is not a surprise for EPI and its president, Christopher Descours. Indeed, in 2017, the latter had already put a foot in Tuscany by buying the Biondi-Santi estate located in the small Tuscan town of Montalcino. The group has thus repeated the move five years later with this second decision confirming its presence in the rich wine region of Tuscany, and more broadly, in Italy.

The acquisition of the iconic Isole e Olena estate celebrates an important moment for us as we continue to expand our presence in Italy following the acquisition of Biondi-Santi. It is an honor to continue the remarkable work that Paolo De Marchi has done for over forty years to develop Isole e Olena and the Chianti Classico appellation,” said Damien Lafaurie, president of EPI Wines & Champagne.
