This Wednesday, VivaTech opened its doors with a reduced gauge for 5,000 people (compared to 125,000 in 2019) including Silicon Valley figures, as well as President Emmanuel Macron, loyal to VivaTech and renewing his attachments to innovation and technology.
The 5th edition of VivaTech held in face-to-face and remote until Saturday, June 19, with distinguished guests: Tim Cook (Apple), Peggy Johnson (Magic Leap), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Sebastian Siemiatkowski (Klarna), and a regular, French President Emmanuel Macron.

The French president began his speech by advocating a “cautious optimism”. Surrounding the French president are four European tech leaders, including one of the founders and CEOs of the French artist and label support company Believe, Denis Ladegaillerie. The businessman says the move to digital is crucial in the music business to bring better services.
“Our ambition is to become the world leader in the development of musical artists in the world, and we believe we have the opportunity,” explains Denis Ladegaillerie. The co-founder of Believe recalls that the company, born in 2005, now employs 1,500 people in 50 countries around the world.
Emmanuel Macron took the floor again, outlining the main challenge of French Tech, which began to arise 4 years ago, that of the need to “build an ecosystem“, preventing French Tech talent from leaving the country to settle in two more attractive regions, such as “New York, London or California“.
However, the French president is pleased: “Since 2017, our start-ups have grown well. With them are more jobs, more industry, more sovereignty for France”. On the issue of job creation, Emmanuel Macron was also keen to clarify things, saying that “contrary to received ideas”, start-ups have enabled the creation of “160,000 direct and indirect jobs” in 2020, including “industrial jobs“.
Macron used the event to mention the Doctolib platform, which is at the forefront of the vaccination campaign in France and Germany. “It’s good for everyone and for the most disadvantaged territories,” he explained. While many criticize him for having reformed the wealth tax, a reform they consider counterproductive in the fight against inequality, Macron responds: “the response to inequality does not involve a policy that would slow down tech and innovation“.
He added that in the aftermath of the health crisis related to Covid–19, it will be necessary to help a large part of the French population to get back on their feet and that the French Tech could allow to “get out of mass unemployment” but also “to respond to the subject of social progress“. For him, the “success of tech is good for the whole country, in all territories“.
On January 1, 2022, France will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months under the motto: “recovery, power, belonging“. In this context, Emmanuel Macron insisted on France‘s progress in the dispute over the international tax.
