Dubai Culture and the House of Jewellery and Watches organised the first edition of the Bulgari Contemporary Art Award from 3 to 8 February at the Van De Goudenberg Art Gallery in Dubai. Dubai Culture selected 17 artists : among them, the Iranian-American artist Nima Nabavi won the award.
Through this event, Dubai Culture and Bulgari wish to support artists from the United Arab Emirates and to highlight the strong links between the cities of Dubai and Rome.
“Beauty Connects People” is the theme for this first edition of the Bulgari Contemporary Art Prize. Thus, the selected artists must be interested in and express in an artistic way, how beauty connects people.
Last December, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority selected 17 national and UAE resident artists to compete for the Bulgari Contemporary Art Prize : Abdulrahim Salem, Aisha AlAli, Alia Lootah, Chie Nakano, Farid Alrais, Ioannis Kadras, Jassim Alawadhi, Juma AlHaj, Kamal Alzubi, Madar Alsuwaidi, Magda Malkoun, Nima Nabavi, Niveen Meguid, Saeed Almadani, Shamsa Juma, Tala Worrell and Valerie Vincent.
“We are proud to showcase the work of the talented artists participating in this inaugural edition of the award and provide a new platform for them to express themselves creatively”, commented Dr Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture.
Three works were shortlisted for the prize : Juma Al Haj’s painting, Kamal Alzubi’s ceramic sculpture and Nima Nabavi’s geometric painting. However, it was Nima Nabavi’s painting that stood out as he won the Bulgari Contemporary Art Prize on Wednesday. Before dedicating himself to contemporary art, Nabavi had spent more than twenty years in business.

Following his victory, Nima Nabavi will travel to Rome for a week-long trip organised and donated by the House of Bulgari, where he will visit design centres, workshops, and cultural and historical sites.
“We are impressed by the rich inspiration of all the participating artists that led to such an interesting dialogue between Rome and Dubai, fueled by the powerful energy of colours. This award represents an important commitment as supporting contemporary artists means investing in a future of ideas, talent and passion. Visiting this exhibition means plunging into an enthralling universe of unbridled creativity, an ode to research and experimentation that perfectly matches Bulgari’s DNA.” , commented Lucia Boscaini, Bulgari Brand Curator.
The work of the winner, Nima Nabavi, will be exhibited in the Italian pavilion of Expo 2020 and in places linked to the two organisers of the event, Dubai Culture and Bulgari.
