The Cosmetic Valley has taken the initiative to launch on 15 October 2020 a collective dynamic on a national scale, with the aim of revitalising the sector following the health crisis. Being the second most important export sector of the French economy, a collective meeting is necessary in order to think about the future of the sector and a new, completely revised action plan. It is in the heart of Sorbonne University in Paris that all the actors of this revival will meet.
According to Cosmetic Valley, the pandemic has particularly affected VSEs and SMEs, which alone represent 85% of the industrial fabric of the French perfumery and cosmetics industry, with 3200 companies and 246,000 jobs, and a turnover of 45 billion euros.
The cosmetics-beauty and well-being sciences cluster is taking up the challenge and maintaining its positions: the recovery will be efficient and sustainable, despite the impact of the pandemic: the objective of this revival is to take concrete measures to revive this market, following a collective strategy that will have been mutually established by all its players.
“Responsibility, Agility, Solidarity and Innovation will be the key words of the recovery, which is likely to be ultra-competitive, especially with Asian players,” said Christophe Masson, Cosmetic Valley’s Managing Director. To this end, the cluster is launching the general assembly of the sector to collectively take up the post-Covid 19 challenge”.
A platform for expression had been opened on the site of the industry’s general assembly in July 2020, with more than 400 contributions collected: from requests on raw materials to distribution, or on formulation, production, packaging and brands.
A new conference is now awaiting them, organised in collaboration with the French State, the European Commission, the FEBEA, the CNEP, the CNRS, and the local authorities. Some major groups will be present, such as Clarins, LVMH or Hermès, SMEs with the presence of Albea or Aptar, startups and professional organisations. The themes that will be addressed during this conference and that will be the subject of debates are the distribution of tomorrow and the omnichannel consumer, the circular economy: sustainable horizon of the cosmetics industry, innovation at the service of a responsible formulation, and cooperation and mutualisation to remain leaders.
The essential challenge of these General Assembly meetings is to be able to adapt to the different evolutions (of the consumer, of today’s world…), to strengthen Made-in-France and to rethink the supply chains by favouring short circuits.
According to the Cosmetic Valley, this conference should be seen as a moment of constructive exchange, during which major players in the sector will be able to participate together. Today it is a question of building a new economic revival and learning the lesson of this year different from the others, to allow ourselves to reinterview the models and practices used, and to better understand the different impacts it has cost. In other words, to think about a more sustainable mode of production made in France.
