After Lamborghini and Fiat, it is Ferrari’s turn to announce the closure of its two main factories in Italy. The reason for this was serious supply disruptions due to the spread of Covid-19 on the national territory.
While Italy has been at a complete standstill for more than a week with more than 20,000 cases of contamination, major groups and companies are suffering from supply difficulties, threatening to break their production chain.
These pitfalls were quick to concern the Italian car manufacturer Ferrari, previously spared: “Ferrari encountered the first serious difficulties in its supply chain, which do not allow to ensure the continuity of production” it justified in a press release.
The prestigious brand with the prancing horse announced on Saturday, March 14, the suspension of its sports car production at its Maranello and Modena factories in the Emilia Romagna region but also of its production of Formula 1 racing cars, until March 27.
This announcement comes at the same time as the cancellation of the Formula 1 motor racing Grand Prix (including the 2020 Australia Grand Prix initially scheduled for this weekend), and is all the more heartbreaking as the brand, after having released new models including limited series, announced a 10% increase in sales in 2019 with a turnover up by 3.7 billion euros.
Faced with the Covid-19 epidemic which is threatening Italy more and more ferociously, the Agnelli family – owner of the Fiat Chrysler group and Ferrari – then declared on Tuesday 17 March to make a donation of 10 million euros to the Department of Civil Protection: “The Agnelli family donated 10 million euros to support the Covid-19 crisis. Ferrari, together with the other companies of the EXOR group, is providing emergency medical equipment. Ferrari, EXOR and the Agnelli family are united against the coronavirus”, could be read yesterday afternoon on their Twitter account.
Louis Camilleri, the brand’s CEO, concluded on an optimistic note: “Ferrari is naturally thinking of its customers and fans, and it is for them that we will be ready for a great restart”, in particular thanks to financial aid promised by the Italian government in the coming days.
