Faced with alarming economic statistics and the rebellion of a part of the population, China could relax its anti-covid measures.
The Chinese population is becoming less and less supportive of the strict policy against Covid-19. In Guangzhou, in southern China, residents clashed with law enforcement officials after the announcement of an extended lockdown. Since an outbreak in October, some of the country’s 18 million inhabitants have been subject to travel restrictions.
Although demonstrations are very rare in the country, social networks nevertheless relay scenes of exasperation from the population in the face of the authorities’ inflexible health policy. Inhabitants find themselves confined as soon as a few cases appear, and are subjected to travel restrictions and sometimes almost daily PCR tests.
Besieged by questions about relaxing the measures, President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his support for the “zero Covid” policy. And recently, the evolution of the epidemic did not argue in favour of lifting the restrictions, according to the latest official figures.
Towards a relaxation?
However, economic statistics show that the country is weakening. As a result, some measures have been taken to ease the restrictions. Beijing has already announced that it is relaxing its quarantine rules for travellers and contact cases.
This news of a simplification of international arrivals in China has boosted luxury industry stocks in France, as well as shares in the airline and mining sectors. At the opening, Kering and Hermès shares rose by 3.5% and 6.5% respectively, which boosted the CAC 40 last Friday.
The slightest good news is a pretext for a rebound for the markets. However, the reopening of China will probably be a long process, even if the news of the last few days seems encouraging.
