Chanel unveils lipscanner, an augmented reality application dedicated to lipstick

It is called Lipscanner, and it allows you to virtually test lipstick shades, or to find from a photo or any object, the color that comes closest to it among the 400 shades offered by the brand.

The application is available for free since Monday, February 22nd, and has two main functions.

The first “Virtual Try” allows you to test different shades of colors on yourself, in order to choose the best color. This function is not new, but in this period of pandemic where the exercise of the activity in store remains unstable, the brand wishes to reduce as much as possible product returns on the one hand, and increase online purchases on the other hand.

The second, slightly more innovative function is “Color Picking”, which initially consists of the user identifying a color she likes on an object. For example, she wants to match a lipstick to a sweater or a handbag, or a photo. Lipscanner reads via the smartphone’s camera the shade. Then, the application proposes to determine the shade closest to the one identified among all the colors in Chanel’s lipstick universe, with more than 400 products available in several colors or finishes.

This new application eliminating the samples dedicated to the fitting – which is not negligible in Covid-19 time – could thus seduce many users.

And all the more so as this feature based on artificial intelligence could save them a lot of time when they are looking for a precise shade, like a Shazam of colors.
