A new report from the CFDA, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, analyzes the ecological impact of New York Fashion Week.

In partnership with the Boston Consulting Group, the CFDA has published a report entitled “Sustainability by Design: Rethinking New York Fashion Week“, described as a focused study with a dual purpose: to provide a “comprehensive summary” of the environmental impact of New York Fashion Week and a “guide for positive change“.

The report includes an assessment and analysis of the current system of New York Fashion Week, including event production, logistics, transportation and public relations, while identifying opportunities to transform New York Fashion Week’s runway season.

The study reveals that a typical New York fashion show generates between 40,000 and 48,000 tons of carbon dioxide, much of which comes from the 10,000 people who fly to New York for the event, as well as additional emissions from the many trips they make from one location to another once in New York. There are also greenhouse gas emissions from the accommodation of guests, the production of the collection itself, and the production of the sets.

In addition, the report reveals that the amount of waste incorporated into the fashion calendar is at the root of the industry’s lack of sustainability. The fashion industry currently emits approximately 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases each year, or nearly 10% of total annual global emissions.

In February, when the CFDA and BCG launched the targeted study, no one could have predicted the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic“, said Steven Kolb, CFDA Executive Director. “The new reality demanded that we radically rethink all aspects of the fashion system and be innovative in the way we deal with the urgent impacts of our industry on climate change and pollution“.

In order to contribute to a greener season for the NYFW next February, the CFDA added that it is planning a series of virtual meetings to educate the public on the subject in order to collaborate on an eco-responsible Fashion Week.

Leading the NYFW toward sustainability requires a joint effort by the fashion community and New York City“, said an IMG executive in the report.
