In this very special year, BMW has managed to climb to the top of the American podium in the luxury car sector, and this in front of its biggest competitors Mercedes and Lexus.

It is against all expectations that BMW at the end of the year 2020 took the advantage in the United States over Mercedes and Lexus. Indeed, even if the brand already had this title the previous year, Mercedes dominated three quarters of the year over its competitors. Moreover, the latter was the number one premium brand in the world until 2019.

BMW then posted a number of 278,732 vehicles sold on the American market in 2020, just ahead of Lexus which reported 275,041 vehicles sold and Mercedes 274,916. With a less developed presence than the latter, Audi brand sold 186 620.

The pandemic clearly affected the sales of the three companies : BMW recorded a fall of 18% for the year to 278,732, Lexus fell by 7.7% to 275,041 and Mercedes-Benz fell by 13% to 274,916.

However, BMW’s commercial activity progressed at the end of the year, which was not the case for the other two. BMW stated that fourth quarter results were only 2% below those of 2019, thanks in particular to record retail sales. Among its best-selling models are the SUVs X3, X5 and X7 and luxury sport utility vehicles.

Overall, the firm experienced an acceleration in sales in the final quarter with a 3.2% increase over the fourth quarter of 2019.

“We have responded to the health crisis with great agility in managing sales and production. The result enabled us to end the year with a solid fourth quarter and a leading position in the premium segment worldwide” says Pieter Nota, BMW AG’s Member of the Board of Management responsible for Customers, Brands and Sales.

The brand does not only shine in the automobile sector, its category of motorised two-wheelers over 750 cc positions it as the leader in France with a 1.6% increase in sales with 18,081 registrations. A record according to the group.

BMW seems then to resist more than its competitors to the crisis, by posting a limited decline in 2020, all the more so as the year 2021 seems promising with the release of many new electric models.
