The MCH Group has decided not to hold Baselworld 2021 which was scheduled from January 28 to February 2, 2021. Faced with the defection of the major watch brands announced in April, the owners of the watch and jewelry fair are looking to develop a new concept.
The MCH Group has decided not to hold Baselworld 2021 which was scheduled from January 28 to February 2, 2021.
In a press release published on May 6, The MCH Group, owner of the watch fair, announces that it has reached an agreement with the representatives of Baselworld exhibitors on the cancellation regulations for the 2020 edition, previously postponed to January 2021, following the spread of the coronavirus.
Bernd Stadlwieser, CEO of MCH Group, said: “We are pleased to have worked together and to have found a mutually acceptable solution in a short time. Given the significant loss of revenue due to COVID-19 and our responsibility to all of our stakeholder groups, this solution marks the limit of what is possible for us. With the friendly settlement of Baselworld 2020, we can now focus fully on the future. ”
Watch brands had last month demanded that they receive all of the 20 million committed, but the Rhine event had declared themselves unable to meet their demands, having already incurred costs of 18.36 million.
Baselworld, which until now was the most important trade fair in the watchmaking sector, had faced an erosion in the number of its exhibitors for a number of years but the crisis worsened last month, when the major watchmaking brands who were still participating decided to withdraw.
Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Hublot, Zenith, Tag Heuer, Bulgari, Chopard and Chanel will now exhibit their new products in Geneva, alongside the Watches & Wonders (ex-SIHH) trade show scheduled for April.
In 2018, the withdrawal of the Swatch group had already put the fair in a very difficult situation.
“I salute the constructive attitude of the representatives of the MCH Group, which enabled us to find a balanced solution,” said Hubert J. du Plessix, president of the Swiss Exhibitors Commission. “I would also like to thank Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor, Chanel, Chopard, Hublot, Zenith and Tag Heuer, who, in a spirit of solidarity with the whole sector, accepted a lower refund so that the other exhibitors can benefit from better conditions ”.
“With exhibitors and visitors, we are working intensively to clarify and discuss the requirements and options for the new platforms,” said Michel Loris-Melikoff, Managing Director of Baselworld. “We will make a decision on possible tracking formats by this summer and then provide information on the new concept and the schedule.”
