Faced with the risk of a shortage during the Covid-19 pandemic, the luxury group LVMH has announced that it will produce “large quantities” of hydroalcoholic gel in its own factories before distributing them free of charge to health authorities.

LVMH announced on Sunday March 15 that it will mobilize three of its perfume and cosmetic production sites (the Dior factory in Saint-Jean-de-Bray, Guerlain in Chartres and Givenchy in Beauvais) to manufacture hydroalcoholic gel, in order to offer it to public authorities exposed to the risk of shortage.

“LVMH will use all of the production units for its perfume and cosmetic brands in France to produce large quantities of hydroalcoholic gels on Monday. These gels will be delivered free of charge to French health authorities, as a priority, as of this Monday, at the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP),” the group said in a statement.

Said thing, done thing. The following day, Monday March 16, the gels were graciously delivered to 39 Public Assistance-Hospitals hospitals in Paris. In total, twelve tonnes of gel, or around 120,000 bottles, are to be produced and distributed this week. And in even more massive quantities, if need be : “Our commitment will be maintained as long as necessary, in conjunction with the health authorities“, specifies the luxury giant.

A movement welcomed by the Parisian public health establishment which had experienced supply difficulties in recent days without, however, going as far as the stock shortage: “The APHP thanks LVMH for its proposal to manufacture and distribute free hydroalcoholic gels” reacted the establishment on its Twitter account.

Very rapid decision-making – “proposed on Saturday evening by LVMH […] and materialized on Sunday afternoon” according to a spokesperson for the world’s number one in luxury – and which did not fail to provoke a chain reaction from the share other major fashion groups, such as the Italian groups Benetton and Armani who both announced donations of more than one million euros to support hospitals in Italy.

The giants Microsoft and Amazon have each given a million dollars to fund US research against the coronavirus and make diagnostic tools available to health authorities in the United States.

L’Oréal should even announce similar measures to the LVMH group in the coming hours.

In these difficult times, and faced with an unprecedented health crisis, it is certain that the union is and will be strong.
