Due to the current context, the exceptional auction of the fashion collections created by Chantal Thomass, initially scheduled for March, has been postponed until this month, as well as until May. The sale will take place in two stages, with an online sale organised from 19 April to 8 May, with 335 pieces, followed by the traditional sale on 6 May in Paris with 274 unique pieces of ready-to-wear, lingerie, catwalk and accessories. To whet your appetite, an exhibition will be held from 12 April in the windows of the Joyce Gallery Paris until 2 May.

As a reminder, the event will be presided over by the designer herself and Didier Ludot, an expert in 20th century haute couture and luxury ready-to-wear and owner of a vintage luxury clothing boutique under the arcades of the Palais Royal following the Personnal Dressing exhibition dedicated to Chantal Thomass.

This exceptional auction is organised by the Million auction house. The sale “Madame Chantal Thomass, 40 years of fashion” will be open on Thursday 6 May 2021 at 2pm at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris and from 19 April to 8 May online. Collectors are advised that it will be possible to bid online on the official Millon website.

Among the iconic pieces on display were the bra hat made of horsehair ribbon, the trompe-l’œil corset dress in black lycra tulle with a “false ass” belt in organza and leather, the “revolver” bag with red tapestry and brown leather from the autumn-winter 1993 collection, and the famous ivory quilted double-breasted “doudoune” dress with a long train from a collaboration with Moncler for the autumn-winter 1992.

Estimates start at 100 euros for the cheapest pieces, and up to 600 euros for the most expensive.

More than just a designer

The sale will also trace the entire career of the designer, who is more than experienced in the various fields of fashion and design. Indeed, Chantal Thomass started out in fashion with Dorothée Bis, launched the Ter and Bantine brand in the late 1960s and dressed Brigitte Bardot and Michèle Mercier. Along with Kenzo, Sonia Rykiel, Claude Montana, Anne Marie Beretta, and Thierry Mugler, she was an illustrious figure in the fashion world from the 1970s on.

Known for having metamorphosed the traditional codes of lingerie, it was in 1975 that she created her company to which she lends her name and the following year that she organised her first fashion show. She was also the first to put lingerie on the catwalk.

The designer emphasises the extravagant elegance, carnality and freedom of clothing rather than functional fabrics and cuts. An instigator of the masculine feminine, and a devotee of fabrics reserved for men for feminine creations, she appropriates them to reinvent the corset, the bra, the garter belt and the stockings, with silk, lace and bows.

“People say, “Chantal Thomass is lingerie”, but no, I’ve done other things. People under 50 have never known ready-to-wear, and I’m happy to show them today. On top of that, I don’t know what my children will do with it when I’m gone.”

Visionary and futuristic, she reinvents fashion and makes it a way for women to assert themselves, to feel beautiful, confident, strong and seductive above all for themselves, and especially not for men.
