The new 19M building dedicated to the House’s artisans, hosted the Chanel Métier d’Art 2022 collection on Tuesday, December 7. At the end of the show, which paid tribute to the House’s traditional know-how, creative director Virginie Viard encouraged guests to visit the marvels of the workshops located in the north of the capital.

In a whirlwind of skills and colors, a staging imagined by choreographer and dancer Dimitri Chamblas revealed on Tuesday the silhouettes of the CHANEL 2021/22 Métiers d’art collection created by Virginie Viard. In the heart of Chanel’s new 25,000 m2 Parisian building, Dimitri Chamblas highlighted the play of graphic textures and precious details as well as the movement that emerges. Dedicated to the Métiers d’art and designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, the 19M, located in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, at the Porte d’Aubervilliers, houses eleven of the art houses acquired by the Chanel group in recent years.

The 19M, a name inspired by the letter M symbolizing the key words related to Chanel’s craftsmanship: Hands, Fashion, Crafts, Art Houses. The 19 that precedes the letter evokes one of Chanel’s emblematic numbers. After the number 5, 19 is Coco’s other fetish number, her second success in the world of perfumery and the last perfume worn by Gabrielle Chanel herself, the one that pays homage to her birth date, August 19, 1883. “To be irreplaceable, you have to be different”, we read on the label of the perfume N°19, in reference to one of the many provocations of the legendary designer. But 19 is also a nod to the number of the district where the building is located.

It’s a vast, open space, with a façade decorated with thin white concrete pillars, a garden, beautiful walkways and a large gallery where exhibitions will also be held,” explains Virginie Viard. “I asked Dimitri Chamblas to choreograph the film presented before the show. The invitation card includes a collection of texts by rappers Claude MC Solaar and Abd Al Malik, and writers such as Sarah Chiche, Anne Berest and Nina Bouraoui, who tell their vision of the Maison d’art, as well as a series of postcards of the animated films created by REMEMBERS. I wanted each model, drawn by a different illustrator, to represent one of the Maisons d’art and evolve into a little story inspired by a CHANEL icon. I wanted to illustrate each House in the best way possible, but with a twist.”

In 59 silhouettes presented in the venue’s large, bright glass space, Virginie Viard showcased the lace and embroidery of Lesage, but also those of Atelier Montex, the jewelry creations of goldsmith Goossens, the hats of hatmaker Maison Michel, the feathers of Lemarié, the steering wheel artist Lognon and the shoes of Massaro. A touch of modernity was also found in denim pieces. There were also two-tone pumps as a nod to the it shoes designed by Coco Chanel, imposing jewelry and an XL logo cardigan with the house logo as a cool endorsement.

This Métiers d’art collection is “very metropolitan yet sophisticated, with tweed jackets with fuzzy sleeves, graffiti-style embroidery in colorful Lesage beads, voluminous purple or royal blue knit shorts and casual coats worn open. Many of the embroideries were inspired by the structure of the building itself, such as those of Montex, which were very graphic and made of silver sequins,” said Virginie Viard.

Among the handpicked guests, Marine Vacth, Sofia Coppola, Vanessa Paradis, Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Diaz from the group Ibeyi, but also Sébastien Tellier visited the workshops that contribute to the creation of the precious collections of the House.
