From now on, it will only be possible to buy one Chanel bag per year. This is due to more or less legal resale channels.

The House Chanel is adopting a drastic measure concerning the purchase and resale of its luxury bags. Indeed, the house intends to prevent the resale of its products on online markets or platforms, especially in Asia.

Luxury products are resold on the “grey” market, especially in China. Resellers buy on a large scale luxury goods in Europe or in the United States to resell them in China, taking a commission in the process. This business works because taxes on luxury goods are very high in China. Not content with counterfeits, buyers prefer to use resellers who can make a profit.

But Chanel is not the first luxury house to take such a step. At Hermès, the house is making its purchasing procedures more and more complex. Each rare piece is available by order only, which limits quantities.

At Louis Vuitton, the website is very clear: the data is kept to “fight against counterfeiting, and against sales of Louis Vuitton products made in violation of our terms and conditions and in violation of our exclusive distribution network (by analyzing, in particular, the quantities or frequency of purchases made) insofar as the fight against counterfeiting and the protection of our distribution network fall within our legitimate interest.

Chinese consumers spent about $35 billion on foreign luxury goods in 2020, with $28 billion of that amount spent through resellers. So that’s a big loss of revenue for luxury brands.
