This week a project to merge between the Vinicole-Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte center (CV-CNF) and the regional cooperative for champagne wines (CRVC) was announced by each of the major structures. The grouping of their major brands such as Nicolas Feuillatte, Henri Abelé et Castelnau would provide a considerable international opening.
A crucial rapprochement is in the offing. Nicolas Feuillate represents the first union of champagne producers and alone brings together around 5,000 winegrowers. It clearly dominates the champagne and the region, since out of 140 cooperatives, it owns 84 out of about 2239 hectares, which is equivalent to about 56% of the contributions.
The Regional Cooperative of Champagne Wines was created in 1962 and now brings together 23 cooperatives with 750 individual winegrowers. The strength of the cooperative ? Its brand portfolio, or rather its emblematic brand : Champagne Castelnau. The CRVC and Champagne Castelnau are one and the same and have a 900-hectare vineyard.
The union of these two cooperatives would strengthen the cooperative fabric of Champagne by bringing together more than 6,000 cooperators in this new entity, which will also bear a new name. The objective is also, and mainly, the international development of the 3 brands owned by these two cooperatives : Nicolas Feuillate, of course, the Red Riviera house Henri Abelé acquired last year by the latter, and Castelnau acquired by the CRVC in 2003.
“Our producer families will be proud to support this new cooperative project. Our vision of the future and our determination will help preserve the social and federative values of our local winemaking community,” said Fabrice Collin, CRVC president.
It should be noted that this new partnership will enable the new entity to position itself just behind LVMH ( €53.7 billion ) while passing ahead of the Laurent-Perrier group (€231 million) with a cumulative turnover of €266 million (€212 million for Nicolas Feuillate and €54 million for the CRVC) in 2019. In other words, this new agreement promises to be very advantageous for both companies.
This is only the beginning of this association since the merger process still needs to be negotiated but above all validated by the respective boards of directors of the cooperatives. Extraordinary general meetings are already planned for June 2021 at the annual general meeting of both companies.
