The Cannes Film Festival seems to have regained the tourist appeal it had before the pandemic hit the world. The one that started yesterday, Tuesday May 17th, can already observe good economic benefits.

The travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic that are gradually disappearing have allowed international tourists to finally be back for the Cannes Film Festival. “For two years, no one has traveled, people now want human contact,” says Romain Benichou, specialist in luxury villa rentals at the real estate agency Century 21 in Cannes. He has also noticed “a real euphoria, a real craze” on the part of the latter.

The economic benefits of this craze are therefore significant and concern in particular the luxury sector. Rentals of top-of-the-range villas and yachts have reached record levels. According to the Cannes City Hall, the total amount of the fallout should reach 196 million euros.

There is a strong demand for the rental of high-end villas,” says Romain Benichou. Major brands are also important clients for the luxury villas located on the Côte d’Azur, where they “house their top management and organize events,” says Stéphane Grosso, general manager of Terre d’Evénements, an event agency located in Nice. As for the hotels, they too are suffering the same fate. All the hotels, upscale or not, are fully booked within a 30km radius of Cannes.

Yachts, very much in demand by tourists

Another indication of the strong recovery: the two yacht harbors in Cannes are saturated. With space for up to 90 yachts between 40 and 80 meters long, they are “full to bursting because of the festival,” says Fabrice Viard, manager, and founder of the Liberty Yachts provisioning company. He is confident that the number of visitors will return to “almost normal” compared to the pre-pandemic period.

On the side of the Festival’s partners, this same confidence is felt. Frederic Henry, the press manager of the ice cream brand Magnum, partner of the festival since 2012, said: “All major producers are present this year in Cannes and the big indicator is the presence of Americans with not only Tom Cruise, who will present ‘Top Gun’, but also Disney or Netflix”.

Indeed, despite the absence of Russian tourists this year in Cannes, the Americans are at the rendezvous and will skillfully compensate for this absence, as confirmed by Fabrice Viard: “We feel that the 2022 season will be good, especially thanks to American customers.

The global audience of the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is back after its cancellation in 2020 and a 2021 edition postponed several times!
