Since May 19th, life has gradually begun to return to normal, marked by the reopening of terraces, casinos and hotels. In the city of Cannes, the eagerness of them towards the return of the Cannes Film Festival can be felt.
“We’re impatient” , admits Pierrick Cizeron, executive chef of the hotel division at the Majestic, a palace located on the Croisette, two minutes from the Palais des festivals.
In 2020, the festival, which brings together big stars and film lovers, had to be cancelled due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The 2021 edition, originally scheduled for May, has been moved to be held from July, 6th to 17th in order to accommodate as many people as possible.
Despite this, one of the most anticipated events of the year is likely to see its attendance cut in half this year. Attracting more than 40,000 people a day, it represents an average of 20% of the turnover of Cannes hotels.
“It’s more than just a rush, we’re in the middle of recruiting 250 people for the season […] The festival is a real driving force and it gives rhythm to our year” , explains Yann Gillet, the director of the luxury Martinez hotel.

Nevertheless, despite the prospect of the upcoming festival and the announcement of the nominated films this Thursday, Cannes hotels are still suffering from the consequences of the pandemic. Closed since October 2020, they are only recording 10% of bookings in June, and 25% in July.
However, hotels are not the only ones to benefit from the Cannes festival. Luxury boutiques, located along the Croisette, generally have resilient demand from people who come to Cannes especially for the festival.
“The festival? it explodes our turnover, we have a magnificent clientele” , exclaims Olivier Zambrana, employee at the Jimmy Choo boutique in Cannes.
