A high-end, hand-assembled Cadillac electric car called “Celestiq” is on its way. A first for the automotive industry and for the U.S. automaker, the $81 million project will be funded by General Motors.
Cadillac will use General Motors‘ revolutionary electric vehicle platform, Ultium, to supply itself with batteries and electric motors. An unusual detail is that it will be assembled entirely by hand by a small team of General Motors employees. Also, it will use more than 100 plastic and metal parts made by 3D printing.
“If done right, the Celestiq could become the kind of high-end model that made Cadillac the choice of celebrities and royalty back in the day,” said Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions (AFS).
The Celestiq will be produced in a very limited series, announced the manufacturer, volume estimated between 200 and 400 units per year. Manufacturing of the car, which is expected to be launched in late 2023, will be carried out for the first time at General Motors’ Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.
While Cadillac has revealed that the price tag for the luxury sedan is estimated to be in the six figures, the design will be unveiled next month, and the car should see the light of day in 2025.
