Appointed by the new Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Emmanuel Macron, re-elected President, Bruno Le Maire has just been reappointed to the Ministry of Economy. In particular, he said yesterday, May 22, that he has started a bill on purchasing power, to counter the effects of inflation.

Bruno Le Maire thanked on his social networks Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne for “their renewed confidence” , before specifying that he would make the fight against inflation one of his priorities.

Inflation is obviously our first challenge,” said the Minister of Economy, Finance and Digital and Industrial Sovereignty on Saturday during the traditional transfer of power. Faced with rising prices, “our priority with Elisabeth Borne will be the protection of the French” continues then the latter.

To this end, Bruno Le Maire received today several employers’ representatives to discuss this bill with them. Interprofessional organizations such as the MEDEF (Mouvement des Entreprises de France), the CPME (Confédération des Petites et Moyennes Entreprises) or the U2P (Union des Entreprises de Proximité) have been invited, as well as sectoral organizations, such as the Fédération du Commerce, de la Distribution and the Fédération du Bâtiment.

This meeting was organized with a very specific goal in mind: to encourage them to participate in the effort to counter the effects of inflation and to prepare with the Minister of the Economy the bill on purchasing power, which will be voted on after the legislative elections.

Bruno Le Maire, who realizes “how much the general increase in prices penalizes all French people” , sees the meeting with economic actors as a way to put pressure on them to act against inflation.

Indeed, the State has already unveiled several weeks ago, the main objectives implemented or planned to fight against inflation. Discount on fuel prices, distribution of a food voucher, increase of the index point of civil servants and revaluation of social minima and pensions are the chapter heads of the bill. The government also states that it has “taken the measure of the inflationary risk very quickly” :

We anticipated. As of October 2021, we have put in place a tariff shield on electricity and gas that allows us today to have the lowest inflation rate in the euro zone. Inflation of nearly 5% is always too much. […] But I recall that it is nearly 8% in Germany, nearly 9% in Spain and more than 11% in the Netherlands,” said the Minister of Economy on Saturday.

The former government spokesman, elected Minister Delegate of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, supported the Minister of his branch, and said he would also be “a relentless artisan of the maintenance of our public accounts” .

Nevertheless, Bruno Le Maire warned that “not everything must be left to the State, the burden must be fairly distributed”. He therefore hopes that a budgetary equation between the State and the employers’ associations can be achieved.  The latter wishes in particular “to study with them how they can also participate in the protection of the French against the rise in prices, whether it is by the Macron bonus, by salaries, or by commitments of sector”.

As a battle of interests between the two parties, the employers’ companies have shared with the Minister some of their demands. One of them mentioned in particular that “the new government must take up the issues of supply problems, supply-chain and soaring energy that can bring the industry to a halt” .
